When you find yourself wandering around Kangaroo Point or even cruising past on the river, chances are you’ve spotted that beautiful old building sitting pretty by the water and wondered what its story is. That’s Yungaba. She’s not just a looker with her sweeping verandahs and grand arches, she’s one of Brisbane’s most fascinating heritage-listed gems, quietly holding onto more than a century of history.
Back in 1887, Yungaba was the first port of call for thousands of hopeful immigrants chasing a new life in Queensland. Families would step off the ship with nothing but suitcases and dreams and find shelter within these walls while they found their feet. Over the decades, Yungaba transformed again and again, doing time as a hospital for returning soldiers, a quarantine station and even government offices when the boats stopped rolling in.
Today, she’s been given a respectful facelift, now luxury riverside residences but the soul of the place is still there if you know where to look. Those sprawling gardens, the grand staircases, the echoes of countless hellos and goodbyes. Next time you stroll along the river at Kangaroo Point, give Yungaba a nod. She’s more than just an old building, she’s living proof that some stories are too good to let fade away.
