Vela Restaurant

Set in the heritage Peters Ice Cream Cone Factory in the heart of West End, Vela is Brisbane’s newest modern Thai restaurant. From the team behind Kinn Thai, it serves dishes where every bite blends traditional flavours with a contemporary twist.

The 200-seat space is sharp and well laid out. Timber booths line the space, curved leather seating breaks up the room and a full moon light installation (yes, really) hovers above the bar. It’s magical and hard not to take a selfie.

On the menu, you’ll find lobster betel leaf, raw oysters with chilli lime dressing, twice-cooked tamarind pork ribs, E-San beef tartare, larb duck, squid mango salad and the usual fare of curries, stir-fries, soups and noodles. Presentation is precise, but flavour always leads.

Cocktails use Thai herbs and spices, while wine and beer lean minimal intervention. Order the Velvet Lychee or Bangkok Sour and thank us later.

Vela is open every day from lunch through to dinner. You’ll find it at West Village on Boundary Street. Book online.
