The Princess Theatre

The Princess Theatre in Woolloongabba stands as Queensland’s oldest surviving theatre. Built in 1888 and designed by architect John Beauchamp Nicholson, it began as the South Brisbane Public Hall. Over time, it served many roles, including a clothing factory, cinema and church, reflecting the changing needs of the community.

In recent years, the theatre has undergone a significant restoration led by the current owners, who aimed to preserve its historic character while updating the venue for modern use. Today, it features a 900 capacity standing auditorium, multiple bars, a café, private event spaces and a courtyard, blending heritage with contemporary design.

The Princess Theatre is now a vibrant cultural hub hosting live music, theatre, and community events. Its stage has welcomed a wide range of artists across genres, making it a key venue in Brisbane’s arts scene. It is easily reached by public transport, with nearby busway stations and parking facilities. The venue also provides accessibility features, including a lift and wheelchair-friendly areas.

For those interested in exploring Brisbane’s cultural history or attending live performances, the Princess Theatre offers a unique experience in a historic setting. Visit the theatre’s website for upcoming events and ticket details.
