The Fifty Six

You’ve probably heard of The Fifty Six by now. Since opening in February 2025 on the top floor of Brisbane’s heritage listed Naldham House, it’s earned a solid rep for modern Cantonese flavours served in a stunning, thoughtfully designed space. Even Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has made a visit, so it’s not just hype.

The name and venue pays tribute to the 56 Chinese immigrants who settled in Brisbane 177 years ago, marking the beginning of the city’s Chinese community. The space, designed by Anna Spiro, balances heritage charm with fresh details. Tall arched windows frame leafy streets, flooding the room with light.

Chef Gerald Ong, with experience from establishments like Chairman Hong Kong and Tigerlane, leads the kitchen. The menu features dishes such as prawn har gow, sweet & sour berkshire pork, Queensland Bay lobster pao fan in superior broth and Queensland blue swimmer crab baked in its shell. A signature tasting menu offers a curated selection of these offerings.

A duck-fat Manhattan headlines the cocktail list, backed by yuzu spritzes and a strong tea selection. The wine list sticks to boutique producers and leans aromatic, so your riesling obsession will feel right at home.

Open Tuesday to Saturday, lunch and dinner, The Fifty Six feels like a welcome addition to Brisbane’s dining scene.
