Sunnyside Sliced

At Gasworks Plaza there is always a quiet rotation of people doing something slightly indulgent. Coffee before work. A quick lunch between errands. A “just one thing” stop that rarely ends with just one thing.

Now there’s a new addition to that routine. Freshly opened in the plaza, Sunny Side Slice is a pizza shop that understands the simple pleasure of grabbing a slice and eating it immediately, preferably while it’s still a bit too hot.

The concept comes from Melbourne, but it fits Brisbane surprisingly well. A bright counter with trays of pizza lined up, ready to go. Large round pizzas share the menu with thick pan slices that come with the crisp, caramelised edges people tend to fight over.

The toppings swing between classic and slightly chaotic, which is part of the fun. There’s the expected pepperoni, bubbling cheese and all. Then there are slices layered with creamy sauces, mushrooms or sharp, pickly flavours that somehow make perfect sense once you try them.

You order at the counter, grab your slice, and find a spot nearby in Gasworks to eat it while the plaza hums around you.

There are plans for more down the track too, including subs packed with fresh fillings and baked bread, which feels like a natural extension of the whole operation. For now though, the slices are the main event.
