San Telmo

If you’re someone who plans dinner around a good steak, you’ll want San Telmo on your radar. The Melbourne favourite has finally made its way north, opening its first Brisbane restaurant at 60 Edward Street. It’s the same Argentinian steakhouse that’s been serving up charcoal-grilled meat in Melbourne for more than 15 years, now with a Brisbane twist.

The heart of the restaurant is the parrilla, a traditional Argentinian charcoal grill that’s fired up early each morning. There’s something very satisfying about a restaurant where the fire is already going before the doors even open.

Inside, San Telmo has gone for a warm, old-world Buenos Aires feel, with burgundy awnings, checkerboard floors, dark timber and plenty of leather. It feels moody without being too fancy, which is probably just what you want when you’re about to get stuck into a big piece of steak.

The menu is made for sharing, with empanadas, provoleta and a selection of premium cuts cooked over the parrilla. The Cuadril is a rump cap from Black Opal F1, while the Solomillo is a dry-aged Stockyard striploin.

And because no Argentinian steakhouse would be complete without wine, around 80 percent of the list comes from Argentina, with bottles from Mendoza and Patagonia alongside Quilmes and South American cocktails.

Basically, Brisbane now has somewhere to eat steak, drink Argentine wine and pretend you’re having a much more glamorous evening than you actually planned.
