Graceville’s Regal Twin Cinemas has been part of Brisbane life since 1922, when it first opened as the Graceville Picture Gardens. Back then it was an open-air theatre where locals would gather under the stars to watch the latest silent films. In the 1930s it was rebuilt as an indoor cinema, giving Graceville its own little slice of Hollywood glamour. The name “Regal” came along in 1953 to mark Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation and the theatre has kept it ever since.

By the late 1960s the Roobottom family had taken over and they’ve run it as an independent cinema ever since, holding onto its old-world charm while keeping things up to date with modern projection and sound. Today the Regal Twin screens a mix of international, arthouse and Australian films you won’t always find at the big chains. With just two screens, a cosy atmosphere and a loyal local following, it remains a true Graceville landmark, still bringing people together to enjoy the magic of cinema more than a century on.
