Redcliffe KiteFest

VietJet Redcliffe KiteFest is returning to Pelican Park in Clontarf on September 19 and 20, bringing two days of giant kites, food trucks, kids’ activities and plenty of reasons to look up from your phone for a while.

The best part? Entry is completely free.

The festival is getting back to what made KiteFest such a much-loved Moreton Bay event in the first place, with the sky taking centre stage. Expect colourful inflatable and artistic kites, including some seriously oversized creations, flown by international and Australian kite flyers across the weekend.

If you’ve got kids, there’ll be plenty to keep them occupied once they’ve finished staring at the sky. A dedicated kids zone, kite-making workshops, rides and a public fly zone mean little ones can have a go at making and flying their own creations too.

And for the grown-ups who have been tasked with packing the picnic bag, there’s food covered too. Food trucks and stalls will be serving everything from festival favourites to international dishes, so you can settle in for lunch without having to remember whether you packed enough sandwiches.

The setting is a big part of the appeal. Pelican Park sits right on the waterfront, about 40 minutes north of Brisbane’s CBD, making it an easy day trip if you’re after something that feels a little more like an outing than another weekend spent doing errands.

The kites will be flying from 10am to 4pm, although displays are dependent on suitable wind and safety conditions. If the wind decides to have a personality of its own, there are still plenty of other things happening around the festival, including the public fly zones, food and kids’ activities.

It’s also worth knowing that you don’t need to organise parking right next to the park. There is free street parking around Pelican Park, although spaces are limited, as well as a free park-and-ride shuttle from Clontarf State High School running continuously from 9:30am to 4pm. The shuttle is wheelchair and pram friendly.

For families looking for something easy to do during the spring school holidays, it’s a pretty hard combination to beat: giant kites, a waterfront picnic, something tasty from a food truck and a whole lot of colour floating around overhead.
