Out of the Box Festival returns to QPAC after seven years

Brisbane’s beloved creative haven for under-8s returns.

Brisbane’s beloved Out of the Box Festival returns this June after a seven-year break, reclaiming its spot as Australia’s premier arts event for children aged eight and under. Spanning QPAC, State Library of Queensland, Queensland Museum, and QAGOMA, the festival transforms the Cultural Precinct into a vibrant playground of creativity, with workshops, performances, and free activities designed to let kids lead the way.

Centered on the theme Hope, the 2025 edition invites children to contribute to the Tree of Hope—a large-scale art installation showcasing their visions of the future, including submissions from regional schools. Highlights include three world premieres: Wolfgang in the Stars (a whimsical acrobatic journey through space), Where is the Green Sheep? (a puppet-filled adaptation of Mem Fox’s classic), and Gurril Storm Bird (a First Nations storytelling collaboration with Yidinji Traditional Owners).

Families can dive into hands-on workshops—from crafting Bluey sock puppets to cooking with QPAC chefs—or join free events like dance parties and the Jarjum Life Museum, where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children share their stories. Parents can unwind at For Mothers sessions, blending self-care with creative activities.

With sensory-friendly performances, interactive theatre, and a focus on inclusivity, the festival celebrates imagination without boundaries.

Dates: 17–22 June 2025
Location: Brisbane Cultural Precinct
