Brisbane, clear your calendar because Matsuri Brisbane is back on 6 September, bringing a full day of Japanese culture, food and entertainment right to your doorstep. From the moment you walk in, the energy hits you, taiko drums echoing across the grounds, the buzz of people lining up for yakitori skewers, kids giggling as they master origami folds and performers bringing everything from martial arts to J-pop to life on stage.

Last year, over 18,000 people came along, and this year’s shaping up to be even bigger. It’s all run by a local volunteer team who have turned a small community celebration into one of Brisbane’s most-loved cultural festivals. And the best part? Entry is free.
There’ll be traditional tea ceremonies for when you need a moment of calm, calligraphy workshops where you can try your hand at elegant brushstrokes and stalls loaded with authentic Japanese street food so good you’ll be lining up twice. And for anyone with a competitive streak, the raffle prizes are next-level, we’re talking flights to Japan, dining vouchers, even island stays.

So gather your mates, slap on some sunscreen and head to Whites Hill State College for a day that’s got something for everyone. Whether you’re there to eat, dance, learn, or just soak up the atmosphere. Matsuri Brisbane is the closest you’ll get to Japan without booking a flight and it’s only here for one day.
