Mary Valley Rattler

If you’re breaking up a day of driving and food stops, the Mary Valley Rattler is an easy way to see more of the region without being behind the wheel and you’ve got a few ways to do it depending on how much time you’ve got.

The train runs out of Gympie using restored heritage locomotives, a mix of steam, diesel, and vintage railmotors. It moves at a steady pace through farmland, small towns and parts of the valley you don’t see from the road. The line follows the Mary River in sections, crosses it at points, then branches off through smaller valleys and creeks before reaching Amamoor, where the engine is turned on a traditional turntable.

The Classic Rattler Run is the main option, Gympie to Amamoor and back, covering the full stretch. If you’re after something shorter, 967 in Dagun focuses on the Dagun section and is a more compact version of the experience.

There are also a few ways to change the experience depending on what you’re after. The Silver Bullet High Tea adds a catered element on board, while Ride With The Driver gives you access to the locomotive itself. For more space, the VIP Lounge Experience and VIP Booth Experience offer a more private setup. And on selected services, Pets On Board means you don’t have to leave the dog behind.

Before you even get on, the Gympie station is worth a bit of time. It’s been restored and gives some context to the line, with a café and small shop if you want to grab something before boarding.

It fits in easily with the rest of a Mary Valley itinerary. Sit down for a couple of hours, see a different side of the region, then get back to the road.
