There are many reasons to head to the river at night in Brisbane. The view of the bridge. The breeze that finally shows up after a long hot day. A margarita that appears in your hand and immediately makes everything feel like a good idea.
For the next couple of weekends, there’s another reason.
La Mexicana Festival is landing at Howard Smith Wharves, turning the riverside precinct into a colourful celebration of Mexican food, music and culture. The festival runs across two weekends, from 5–8 March and 12–15 March, with afternoons and evenings dedicated to tacos, cocktails and general good vibes by the water.

At the centre of it all is a special guest from Mexico City. The chefs from the Michelin-recommended taqueria El Vilsito are travelling to Brisbane to cook their famous tacos exactly the way they do back home. It’s the proper street-style tacos served fresh from the grill, the kind you eat standing up with a napkin in one hand and absolutely no regrets.
Around them, the rest of the wharves joins the party. Expect margaritas in all forms, from classic lime to smoky or spicy versions, along with venue specials across the precinct as part of the broader Margarita Week celebrations.

The atmosphere leans festive rather than formal. Music drifts through the lawns, the river sits quietly beside you, and people move between tacos, cocktails and the occasional second round of both. It’s less sit-down dinner, more riverside fiesta.
Which feels about right for Brisbane in March.
Good food, good drinks and a reason to gather by the river while the city glows around you.
