Located beside the award-winning Aizome Bar on Montague Road, +81 Sushi Kappo is an intimate 12-seat restaurant that officially opened on 5 February, embodying the precision and restraint of Japan’s kappo tradition.

At the heart of the experience is executive chef Ikuo Kobayashi, a Tokyo trained chef whose résumé includes stints at some of Japan’s most revered sushi institutions, including the Michelin-starred Kyubey and other highly regarded kitchens in Ginza.
‘Kappo’, meaning to cut and to cook, places the chef’s craft centre stage. Each multi course omakase is served at the counter, with dishes that reflect seasonality, texture and balance, from refined sashimi to signature nigiri and seafood led courses tailored to local and Japanese ingredients.
The minimalist West End space is intentionally calm and understated, with a monochrome palette and soft lighting that keeps the focus on the food and the interaction between chef and guest.

The experience isn’t light on the wallet (menus start around $450 per person), but it comes with a considered sake, wine and spirits programme and options to linger afterwards in the adjoining lounge with Japanese whisky or cocktails.
If you’re ready for a highly personalised, high-end Japanese dining experience in Brisbane, +81 Sushi Kappo is shaping up to be one of the city’s most talked about reservations.
