Idle

Agnes Bakery was the toast of James Street for over three years, born from a COVID era pop up and kept alive by wood-fired pastries and loyal queues. But when relentless next door construction started choking out that early morning charm, the team decided it was time to wave goodbye, celebrating with 100 mini almond croissants for their final weekend fans before shutting on June 15.

Not to worry though, Agnes didn’t just vanish, it morphed, matured and got itself a glow-up. Enter Idle at 84 Merthyr Road, New Farm. Same crew, same delicous hand shaped pastries, but now it’s a full blown café, market and pantry paradise. You can still get your fix of sourdough crumpets, Turkish (Baghdad) eggs and that Euro-style combo plate, but now joined by charcoal roasted chicken, grain salads, open face sammies, green goddess bowls and a 36 seat sunlit industrial chic space by Tamsin Johnson.

Idle swung its doors open on Saturday, June 21, 2025, giving fans every reason to linger and to stock their homes with housemade condiments like gentleman’s relish, smoked labneh and toum, plus boutique wines, honey and small batch spirits.

So yes, your beloved Agnes is gone, but Idle ensures nothing important was lost. Bold move from Anyday and a tasty one at that.
