Gilberton Outback Retreat

This is the real outback, 88,000 acres of working cattle station, gold rush history, rugged bushland and silence so complete it rings in your ears. Perched on a rocky bluff overlooking the Gilbert River, the retreat is an off grid, one cabin only escape made for travellers looking to swap noise and notifications for stillness and sky.

Run by the seventh generation French family, Gilberton is steeped in heritage. The family has been on this land since the 1800s and you’ll feel that legacy in everything from the stories they share over dinner to the old stone ruins scattered across the property. While the homestead remains the heart of the station, the guest retreat stands alone. A luxury eco cabin built for two, with sweeping views, a king-size bed, rainwater shower, an open-air bath, fireplace, and a private deck for watching the sun sink behind distant hills.

You won’t find WiFi or phone reception here, and that’s entirely the point. What you’ll get instead is an all-inclusive stay that revolves around connection — to place, to people, and to pace. Meals are made from locally sourced ingredients and served either privately at the cabin or shared with the family at the homestead. Champagne on arrival, a welcome platter, and sunset drinks each evening set the tone, but it’s the experiences that make the stay unforgettable.

Guests can try their hand at gold fossicking, explore the remnants of the 1869 gold rush, or join station life with a guided buggy tour of the cattle operation. There are bushwalks through eucalypt country, paddling sessions on the dam, and a chance to see Aboriginal rock art and native wildlife — all with zero crowds and endless horizon. Gilberton is also a registered nature refuge, and the family’s deep respect for the land is woven into every part of the experience.

Whether you arrive by 4WD or helicopter, what awaits is more than just a retreat. It’s a place to be still, to listen, and to see the outback through the eyes of those who call it home. This is a stay that strips things back to what really matters — land, history, and the kind of welcome that stays with you long after you leave.
