There’s something about the Brisbane Jazz Club that makes you feel like you’ve stepped out of the city without actually leaving it. Perched right on the river at Kangaroo Point, this place has been serving up live jazz for over fifty years and still feels refreshingly unpretentious. You don’t come here for fancy cocktails or a dress code, you come for the music, the riverside breeze and the simple joy of watching a tight band do what they do best.

The room is small enough that you’re practically part of the show. Tables are crowded with regulars who know every musician by name, couples on a date who just discovered how good a trumpet can sound up close and a few tourists who lucked out finding this spot. When the band takes off, conversation drops away and you remember what live music is supposed to feel like. It’s warm, it’s human, and it’s a little rough around the edges in the best possible way.

Brisbane has plenty of shiny new venues but the Jazz Club keeps doing its thing and we’re better for it. Go once and you’ll probably be back, that’s how it works.
