Better by Bike

Just north of Byron Bay is the award winning Northern Rivers Rail Trail, Stretching 24km from Murwillumbah to Crabbes Creek, the trail winds through lush hinterland, rainforest gullies, and sleepy villages, with plenty of reasons to hop off the bike along the way, a perfect blend of nature, food, and culture.

Better by Bike has a fleet of e-bikes to hire and makes it all effortless to organise. You can be picked up from your Byron Bay accommodation or meet the team at Murwillumbah Railway Station. Their fleet of premium e-bikes, fat-tyre cruisers, and family-friendly setups takes the effort out of pedalling, while helmets, lights for the tunnel, and 30L pannier bags for your belongings are all supplied. If anything happens along the way—like a flat tyre—they fix it. You also receive clear instructions and insider trail recommendations, so you can focus on the ride and the scenery.

The villages along the trail are a treat. Handmade gelato for the kids, cheese boards and wine for adults, antique stores, vintage fashion, and local galleries offer plenty of excuses to pause. The Margaret Olley Art Gallery, with its sweeping valley views and café, is a must-stop, while the Mooball Pub—complete with a swimming pool—is a quirky spot for lunch. Fresh fruit stalls showcase the region’s farm-fresh produce, connecting riders to the heart of the Northern Rivers.

The ride itself is unforgettable: sugar cane fields, rainforest gullies, farm land, winding creeks, and a glow worm-filled railway tunnel that comes alive on nightly e-bike tours ( must do!). It’s part adventure, part gourmet trail, part cultural wander—perfect for families, couples, or friends.

If you want some e-bikes to explore Byron Bay or the Tweed Coast Better by Bike can also drop bikes to your accommodation for the duration of your stay.

For Brisbane locals, this weekend escape is just a short drive south, and with Better by Bike handling all the logistics, all that’s left is to ride, taste, and explore.
